21 Jan I Heart Consent
The ‘I Heart Consent’ campaign was introduced to the University of Brighton 2 years ago by Brighton Students’ Union. It’s a nationwide campaign run by National Union of Students’ (NUS) which aims at tackling sexual assault and harassment through education and awareness raising activities.
Brighton Students’ Union seeks to educate its members about the boundaries of consent in all of its forms. The Unions’ aim is to host continual workshops throughout the year, lobby the university to introduce mandatory consent seminars for all new cohorts of students and to create an environment where all students can feel safe.
We have a trained team of consent facilitators who are passionate about their role and engaging with their fellow students. These facilitators host workshops across the university, working in tandem with our student societies such as; LGBT+, FemSoc and more. Brighton SU’s full-time elected officers, ‘Sabbs’, engage in writing policies which will have long term impacts. The introduction of welfare officers on all student societies and sports teams is a recent win, through this we aim to have consensual environments reinforced through a peer to peer basis.
With constant support from the student leadership team and student body, we are making positive strides towards a university that is safe and consensual.
